This week I have the pleasure of featuring the amazing Asherlee Marshall.  I love her whimsical approach to her art almost as much as I love her editing style.  After you read her Q&A, head on over to her page and show her some mad love!

Meet the Artist

1. When did you fall in love with photography?
I can remember being elementary school age and regularly asking for film or a new film camera on special occasions.  From early on I was attracted to documenting everything. However, it wasn’t until the birth of my eldest, 8 years ago, that my love grew into more than just snapshots. She gave me the confidence and drive I needed to trust that I was enough, that I could teach myself the art.
2. What’s in your camera bag?
My camera bag is home to my D750 and it’s lifemate my 35mm Art. I also carry a Nikon F3 and attached to it is an older 50mm 1.8. Then there’s usually my Nikon 105mm 2.8 and another newer Nikon 50mm 1.8.
A few other must-haves items I always carry: My contact rewetting drops, burt bees peppermint lip balm ( because I’m obsessed with all things peppermint) a flashlight, and a compact hair brush.
3. If you could give one piece of advice to parents who are looking to take better lifestyle pictures of their kids, what would it be?
Most of the time your goal when shooting lifestyle is to be a fly-on-wall. Although, shooting your own kids usually requires a bit more wrangling. Instead of full-on directing, I try and guide their attention/ discussion to something in the direction of where I want the light to hit them- versus just asking them to move or look that way. I really like to talk to them about something they’re currently in to, whether it be a show, song, book or new toy. I get them going, then I specifically ask about how they feel or how does it make them feel. That emotion is usually expressed on their face as well as in their words. I’d like to add, don’t disregard a photo because your focus isn’t as sharp as you’d like or there’s blur you didn’t intend on. Lifestyle photography is meant to capture the candid and raw moments in life. AND life is anything but perfect. If the emotion and connection are there, then the realness of the moment outweighs any rule.
